Education in Kent
As mentioned in the previous page Kent is home to a number of universities, this means that every year the area receives a huge number of students wanting to apply to each one of the universities. Each of the universities are popular for a number of different reasons with the universities all having slightly different approaches to different subjects, as well as them all offering different subjects, some are also highly thought of for different subjects. For the universities that are popular for specific subjects they will receive thousands of applications that one subject, this makes them extremely competitive to get into.
The university of Kent has been part of Kent since the 1965, when it was first opened in 1965 it was named the University of Kent at Canterbury. The thought of having a university in city first came up in 1947 when there was a large growth in student numbers with people then starting to pick to go onto further education. However it wasn't until over a decade later when there was should a huge increase in the population as well as people going to university. During this time, which was around 1959 the county council in Kent started to explore the possibilities of having a university I the area, it was then a year later when they got the agreement from the Education committee.
Through the 60s after the university has opened it continued to grow with three colleges as well as a number of buildings being added to the campus. During the 70s it also continued to be added to, however it also came under a huge problem. The university was built onto of the old tunnel of Canterbury and Whitstable railway, and in 1974 the tunnel collapsed taking one of the universities buildings down with it. The building has sunk over a metre down, and so it underwent reconstruction and saw a new wing added to the other side of the building to replace it.
In recent years the university has redone its logo as well as its website, given it a more modern and updated look. There are a number of campuses as part of the University of Kent and many of them can be found on the main campus the Canterbury Campus. This campus covers over 300 acres and is just under 2 miles from the city centre of Kent.
Another university in the area is the Canterbury Christ Church University in the Canterbury area. The university was first founded in 1962 through the Church of England. It was founded as to meet the needs of the church schools during the time when there was a huge shortage of teachers. Classes for the university first started in the Priory next to St Martin's Church. A campus for the university was then built on North Holmes Road in Canterbury which was part of Canterbury's World Heritage site. It was during the 70s when the university first gained its first degree programme, the Bachelor of Education. Then 7 years later they were able to offer applicants a joint honours degree in a number of subjects.
